株式会社東基の創立50周年記念式典で書道パフォーマンスを行う矢部澄翔

From the archive, August 18, 2012: the commemorative ceremony for Toki Corporation.

I performed the opening act for their 50th Anniversary Ceremony — a sophisticated stage in collaboration with a string ensemble.

Calligraphy with Strings

While I often perform with Japanese drums and traditional instruments, writing to the elegant melody of violins was a refreshing experience.

Matching the solemn atmosphere of the ceremony, I let the brush move quietly, yet with strength.

"Ren" (Refining) — Chosen by the Employees

The character I wrote was 「練」 (Ren).

It was chosen through an internal contest to represent "the kanji most suitable for the future of Toki."

"Ren" means to knead, to polish, to train, to refine.

It embodies the determination to refine the skills and spirit built over 50 years, and to continue evolving for the future.

Why Calligraphy for an Anniversary?

An anniversary ceremony is a moment to look back on a company's history and share its resolve for the next era.

A live calligraphy performance — a single character coming to life on blank paper — lets everyone witness that "future" being born together.

The finished artwork often remains in the company as a daily guidepost, which is one of the joys of this work.
